North Kansas City Schools | SAGE Center
North Kansas City Schools, the largest school district in the Kansas City area, is recognized throughout Missouri as a leader in academic innovation. Since 1974, the district has offered the Students in Academically Gifted Education (SAGE) program. The goal of the project is to create a learning environment that inspires curiosity and encourages students to learn, collaborate and think creatively.
The SAGE Middle School occupies 25,000 sq. ft. of the second and third floors in the Northland Innovation Center. These spaces challenge the idea of the traditional classroom by creating learning environments without walls. This open classroom concept allows for collaboration and promotes a project-based teaching approach. The program is organized into five learning pavilions: digital art, science, business, engineering and humanities. Limiting the wall height to the necessary storage requirements, the lack of separation promotes cross-pollination between fields of study. Occupying a total of four levels, the SAGE Elementary and Middle School programs are vertically connected with a central, open stairway as well as a presentation learning stair. The design has played a crucial role in changing the way faculty teach and students learn. SAGE has become a model for schools looking to create a more active and engaging learning environment for educators across the region.
