The Sustainable Laboratory For this project, Hoefer Wysocki developed a mezzanine concept for the Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 Science & Technology Center, allowing for better views and an interesting interior environment that includes three main building components desired by the client—office, laboratory and material handling. Careful planning allowed for efficient and flexible work space as well as a courtyard, library, conference rooms and dining areas centralized at the core of the buiding. The mezzanine and circulation spine allowed for great views to downtown and the river, and became the strong statement for the buiding. This facility was the first laboratory in the state of Kansas to receive LEED Gold certification—only the third in the country at time of completion.
